You are at work or school and have only 30 minutes to grab a meal. What do you do? Easy. You go to the nearest fast food restaurant grab a burger or French fries and chicken. This cycle continues for as long as it can until you wisen up or change your scenery.
Fast foods have been existing in our society as far back as ancient Greece and Rome. The trend became extremely popular in the 18th Century. They seem awfully convenient and are marketed as quick fixes because they are prepared almost instantly – hence the name ‘fast food’.
It has been public knowledge that fast foods are generally unhealthy and should be avoided as much as possible. Fast foods have been linked to obesity and several diseases such as atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, cancer and heart failure.
Fast foods are also known to have a high sodium, calorie and fat content.Dietitians, Nutritionists and health practitioners have given supporting theories as to why fast foods are bad.People think that going for French fries is healthier than the double beef burger because French fries are just fried potatoes but that is not the whole story.
Fast food restaurants are champions when it comes to re-using oil for frying. First of all, they don’t make use of healthy oils and then they use it continuously in an effort to cut down on the cost of buying cooking oils every time. When oils are re-used, they create a lot of free radicals which cause several health problems as Alzheimer’s, cancer, atherosclerosis etc.
Fast food fried beefs and grilled beefs have been known to contain carcinogens which cause cancer. A test ran on grilled chicken from Burger King and McDonald tested positive for a dangerous carcinogen known as PhIP. These fast food chains were sued as a result of this.
Fast foods contain a lot of preservatives such as nitrates, sulfates, sodium benzoate etc. These chemicals increase the risk of cancer and can cause harm to our organs such as the heart, brain, adrenal glands etc.
#3. Food poisoning
Majority of the eggs and poultry used in fast foods are gotten from farms which do not practice good hygiene. Some of the animals are infected with salmonella and this is a major cause of food poisoning.
Salmonella is seen mostly in raw foods or under-cooked foods. Fast foods do not properly cook their foods, in effort to get it ready ‘fast’. Therefore, encouraging the continuous presence of salmonella in our foods.
Fast foods are a one-way street to obesity. There is no doubt about it. They are rich in sugars, calories and unhealthy ingredients. They are simply bad news. Fast foods do not contain as much vitamins and minerals as required by a body for growth and sustenance.
Due to their convenience and cheap cost, the rate of obesity arising from consumption of fast foods is very high. Furthermore obesity is only the stepping stone to many complicated diseases such as heart diseases, arthritis etc.
Nobody wants acne, so why consume fast foods. Fast foods can indirectly cause pimples because the body’s metabolism changes in response to them and boosts insulin. As time goes by, high insulin levels can make the skin drier, thicker, and flakes of dry skin block pores. It can also increase levels of free androgens (male hormones) in males and females, making the skin’s sebaceous glands produce more oil and triggering acne.
So why not pack a sandwich or a box of your favourite fruits next time you are going to work or school. This would really help in stopping you from going to any fast food restaurant next time you get any food cravings.
